Thanks to our great volunteers!
How can we possibly thank every member of the Greater Dayton legal community for the valuable assistance provided to those less fortunate? Sometimes words just don’t seem to be enough.
We never cease to be impressed by the willingness of lawyers in our seven county service region (Champaign, Clark, Darke, Greene, Montgomery, Miami, and Preble) to support the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project through generous financial contributions and the countless hours of volunteered representation.
In 2013, we closed over 1600 cases that accounted for over 3,200 hours of attorney time. That’s over $500,000 worth of volunteered legal services. We have assisted more than 2000 members of our community, almost half of them children.
We assist people individually. One client went to school to train as a plumber. The school took his tuition money and trained him, knowing he would be unable to work as a plumber because of a physical disability. The man was relieved of his student loan and the school reviewed for its behavior.
We also assist people in clinic settings. We recently helped more than a half dozen individuals who qualified for homes through Habitat for Humanity of Greater Dayton. We prepared wills and other directives to help them manage their finances and responsibilities in a sensible manner.
To quote Maya Angelou, “I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.” To all of the amazing attorneys who volunteer their time to the Greater Dayton Volunteer Lawyers Project, thank you very much for throwing it back through our organization!
