Unsung Heroes of the VLP

So many talented attorneys in our community volunteer their time through the VLP, and we can’t say thank you nearly often enough.  So we’ve come up with an additional way to say thank you.  On a quarterly basis, we will be giving “Unsung Heroes” awards to those volunteers who selflessly give their time and talent to those in our community who need legal assistance in civil matters.

 John P. Hilgeman - December 2014

The VLP is proud to name John P. Hilgeman of Cowan and Hilgeman as its first "Unsung Hero".  As of December 2014, John has taken just shy of 100 divorce cases for the VLP and has been a volunteer for the last nine and half years. His never ending belief that all individuals are entitled to access to justice has made his dedication and willingness to help unfaltering. Although it is always our intention that VLP divorce cases will be uncontested, the reality is that it doesn’t always happen that way. John is always willing to keep those cases and see them through to the end. He is always willing to mentor attorneys with less experience, answer questions, and give suggestions.

John is a graduate of Archbishop Alter High School and received his B.A. from the University of Cincinnati and his law degree from the University of Dayton. He has worked with Lexis Nexis, Attorney Jack E. Staley and the law firm of Altick and Corwin. In 1994 John and Christopher Cowan became partners and opened Cowan and Hilgeman.

We thank John for his commitment to VLP and his tireless willingness to continue to help. His contribution has made a difference to our organization and in turn has touched the lives of so many VLP clients.
